Commercial Tire Technician

A commercial tire technician installs, repairs, and maintains tires on commercial vehicles like trucks and heavy equipment. Key duties include inspecting tires for wear, checking inflation, rotating tires, and performing repairs. They use specialized tools like hydraulic jacks and torque wrenches, often perform roadside assistance, and must maintain a safe and clean work area. 

Core responsibilities

  • Tire services: Mount, dismount, repair, and replace commercial-sized tires on various rim types.
  • Inspections: Perform safety inspections on tires, wheels, and vehicles before and after service to check for wear, proper inflation, and potential issues.
  • Repairs: Seal punctures in tubeless tires and replace valve stems.
  • Balancing: Place wheels on balancing machines, identify the required counterweights, and hammer them onto the rims.
  • Maintenance: Rotate tires according to manufacturer recommendations and perform routine maintenance like oil changes or lubrication if required.
  • Roadside assistance: Drive to customer locations to provide emergency repairs or service on the side of the road or in a shop. 

Key skills and qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude: Proficiency with specialized equipment such as hydraulic lifts, torque wrenches, and balancing machines.
  • Safety awareness: Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety guidelines, including using tire cages when inflating tires.
  • Physical stamina: Ability to lift heavy objects (often over 100 pounds), work in awkward positions, and withstand loud, dirty environments.
  • Detail-oriented: Meticulous attention to detail is required for accurate inspections, repairs, and documentation.
  • Communication: Ability to clearly explain the reason for work to customers and supervisors and document work performed.
  • Valid driver's license: A clean driving record is often required, and a commercial driver's license (CDL) may be necessary for some positions. 

Other duties

  • Documentation: Accurately complete work orders and maintenance reports.
  • Shop maintenance: Keep the shop floor, service areas, and equipment clean and organized.
  • Inventory management: Unload and organize shipments of new tires and supplies.
